Extra-A Plus & Vegetarian Extra-A:
These products contain 25,000 units of vitamin A. The Extra-A Plus has 8,333 IU from each of the following: beta-carotene, fish liver oil and vitamin A palmitate. The Vegetarian Extra-A is a vegetarian formulation that has 12,500 IU of vitamin A from beta carotene and 12,500 IU of vitamin A palmitate. The beta-carotene is a natural source mixed carotenoid that also contains alpha-carotene, cryptoxanthein, lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene. Vitamin A activity is only claimed for the beta-carotene, but the other carotenoids have other important biological activities, and some are even more powerful antioxidants than is beta-carotene. The combination of carotenoids is more natural since foods contain all of the carotenoids. There is also an extra margin of safety when some of the vitamin A activity is provided in the carotenoid form. Carotenoids are essentially non-toxic even at high doses in contrast to pre-formed vitamin A, which is toxic at high doses.
