Excipients

In most cases it is easy to determine everything that goes into your supplement just by reading the label. FDA labeling regulations require that all active ingredients be listed in the “Supplement Facts” box, and other ingredients be listed beneath as “Other Ingredients.” This is a reasonable regulation that allows the consumers to know exactly what they are taking. It is frequently necessary to use excipients to maintain a consistent capsule weight or even to make a product at all. We use only excipients that are safe and natural, and in some cases even contribute to the nutritional content. We only use excipients when we absolutely must, in order to produce a quality product. Many Daily supplements have no excipients. The list of excipients below explain what they are and why they are used. The identifying codes can be used to tell what excipients are in the products listed.The letter codes are at the end of each product description in parenthesis. The following excipients may be used in Daily products. Each name is followed by an alphabetical code that is used at the end of each product description to indicate what excipients are used. If a product contains any of the excipients below, it will be indicated in the product description and on the label.

(Non-Active Ingredients)

No Excipients (NE): Many products contain no excipients.

Cellulose (C): Also known as microcrystalline cellulose. A purified plant fiber used as a filler, flowing agent, and aids tablet disintegration. Besides aiding in manufacturing, cellulose supplies a high quality dietary fiber.

Chlorophyll (CL): Natural plant material used as a protective coating on tablets.

Croscarmellose Sodium (CS): This form of cellulose absorbs large quantities of water and expands rapidly. This is used in small amounts to help tablets disintegrate. This effectively eliminates the problem of undigested tablets.

Magnesium Stearate (MS): Magnesium stearate is made by combining magnesium with vegetable oils. Magnesium stearate assists in allowing ingredients to flow into tablet dies and capsules.

Shellac (S): A natural coating produced from tree resins by insects and collected by farmers in India. Used on a few tablets that need protection from oxygen and moisture.

Silicon Dioxide (SD): A natural silica used as an anti-caking agent, that allows “sticky” materials to flow. All silica is poorly absorbed, but does add some silicon to the diet. Typically used in concentrations of 1% or less.

Soybean Oil (SO): This natural vegetable oil is frequently included in softgel capsules containing fat soluble vitamins or oils.

Stearic Acid (SA): A natural vegetable oil often used as a lubricant to allow difficult agents to flow. Used in small amounts (usually 2% or less) therefore, not adding significant calories from fat.

Elemental Values of Minerals:

Minerals do not normally occur as pure mineral, but rather, as part of complex molecules. Some common examples are calcium citrate (calcium combined with citric acid to form calcium citrate) or chelated iron (iron bound to amino acids and/or small proteins). In each case, the calcium or iron accounts for less than 25% of the total weight of the actual substance. Therefore, it is important to know how much actual calcium or iron is in each tablet or capsule. The supplement should state the actual amount of the mineral in question. A supplement may read, “100 mg of calcium from calcium citrate”. In this case there would be 100 mg of elemental calcium, but the calcium citrate would weigh 500 mg. It would take 12 of the capsules to obtain the entire RDA for calcium (1200 mg).

Vegetarian Capsules

Daily Manufacturing is now using vegetarian capsules (Vcap) in all encapsulated products—except softgel capsules (which are not available). This represents a substantial cost to us, but we believe that it adds quality to our products. Vegetarian capsules are made from a plant derived cellulose and are digested as easily and rapidly as gelatin capsules.

A&D Vitamins

Extra-A Plus & Vegetarian Extra-A: These products contain 25,000 units of vitamin A. The Extra-A Plus has 8,333 IU from each of the following: beta-carotene, fish liver oil and vitamin A palmitate. The Vegetarian Extra-A is a vegetarian formulation that has 12,500 IU of vitamin A from beta-carotene and 12,500 IU of vitamin A palmitate. The beta-carotene is a natural source from mixed carotenoid that also contains alpha-carotene, cryptoxanthein, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene. Vitamin A activity is only claimed for the beta-carotene, but the other carotenoids have other important biological activities, and some are even more powerful antioxidants than beta-carotene. A combination of carotenoids is more natural, since foods contain all of the carotenoids. There is also an extra margin of safety when some of the vitamin A activity is provided in the carotenoid form. Carotenoids are essentially non-toxic, even at high doses. In contrast to pre-formed vitamin A, which is toxic at high doses. Extra-A Plus and Vegetarian Extra-A are both available in bottles of 100 and 250 capsules. (C, MS)

B Vitamins

Activated B6: Conventional vitamin B6 is in the form of pyridoxine hydrochloride. In order for the body to use pyridoxine hydrochloride, it must be processed by the body into the coenzyme form, Pyridoxal-5-phosphate. The processing of pyridoxine requires two energy utilizing steps, catalyzed by the enzymes pyridoxal kinase and pyridoxine phosphate oxidase. Daily B6 is the coenzyme form, eliminating the need for processing by the body. It is like a plug in module and is much more efficiently used than the regular type. Each capsule contains 50 mg and is available in bottles of 100 capsules. (C, MS)

Activated B-12: Activated B-12 contains equal amounts of 5-deoxyadenosyl cobalamin and methylcobalamin. These are the active forms of vitamin B-12. For normal absorption, B-12 requires intrinsic factor; but even without intrinsic factor, 1-2% of B-12 can be absorbed. Therefore, since there are 500 mcg per capsule, considerably more than the RDA of 2 mcg should be absorbed by anyone taking it. Activated B-12 is available in bottles of 180 capsules. (C, MS)

Activated B-Complex: Each capsule contains active forms of B6 (10 mg), B12 (20 mcg), thiamine (10 mg), and riboflavin (10 mg). There is also niacinamide (40 mg), niacin (20 mg), folic acid (200 mcg), pantothenic acid (10 mg), PABA (20 mg), biotin (150 mcg), choline (20 mg), and inositol (20 mg). All of the B vitamins are provided in the forms best utilized by the human body. Available in bottles of 100 and 250 capsules. (C, MS)

Folic Acid: Each tablet contains 800 mcg of folic acid in a slotted tablet that can be broken in half for a 400 mcg dose. Folic Acid is available in bottles of 100 and 250 tablets. (C, MS)

Niacin: Niacin (nicotinic acid) is used in the body to make nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and NAD-phosphate, which supplies energy for many catabolic and anabolic reactions. Niacin will cause a transient niacin flush with redness and a burning sensation in the skin. The niacin flush is uncomfortable but harmless for most people - possible exceptions are persons with asthma or peptic ulcers. C Vitamins

Acerola Cherry: Our all-natural vitamin C tablets from acerola cherries can be chewed or swallowed, and have a pleasant tart flavor. Each tablet contains 60 mg of vitamin C. Acerola C is available in bottles of 60 tablets. (SA, sorbitol, vanilla)

Lemon C: Lemon C contains 500 mg of vitamin C and 150 mg lemon bioflavonoid complex. Lemon C is available in bottles of 120 capsules. (SD, MS)

Spectra-Scorb: Spectra-Scorb vitamin C is in the form of mineral ascorbates; containing 500 mg of vitamin C per tablet, plus 100 mg of mixed bioflavonoids and the following amount of minerals from the mineral ascorbates: potassium (30 mg), calcium (26.5 mg), magnesium (13.5 mg), zinc (1.75 mg), and manganese (630 mcg). Spectra-Scorb Plus: Spectra-Scorb Plus contains mineral ascorbates in an 8 hour sustained release tablet , with a chlorophyll coating. Each tablet contains 1000 mg of vitamin C per tablet, along with 100 mg of the following blend: hesperidin, rose hips, acerola cherry, pectin, orange, lemon, grapefruit, and rutin. The mineral ascorbates provide the following amounts of elemental minerals: calcium (60 mg), magnesium (24 mg), zinc (2.5 mg), potassium (70 mg) as citrate-aspartate, not ascorbate), manganese (125 mcg), and molybdenum (200 mcg). E Vitamins

Dry Vitamin E: This Dry Vitamin E contains 400 IU (d-alpha tocopheryl acid succinate) from soy oil in vegetarian capsules. This form has less oil and a longer shelf life than the oil type capsules. Dry Vitamin E is available in bottles of 100 capsules. (C, MS)

Vitamin E: Natural d-alpha tocopherol from mixed tocopherols is the most natural form of vitamin E. While vitamin E activity is only claimed for the alpha tocopherol, the other naturally occurring tocopherols may have biological activity as well. This high quality natural Vitamin E is available in two strengths: 400 unit (100 softgel capsules), and 1000 unit (50 softgel capsules). (SO)

Calcium Lactate: This milk type calcium is from a non-dairy source. It is naturally produced by fermentation of calcium carbonate with sugars and starches from potatoes. Minerals

Chromium Picolinate: There are a number of chromium supplements on the market including GTF chromium, chromium polynicotinate, and others. All of the better chromium supplements, including chromium picolinate, are in a tri-valent chemical state. Chromium picolinate has the advantage of being hypoallergenic since there is no yeast. Furthermore, most of the chromium research has used the picolinate form of chromium. Chromium picolinate is the best researched and most reliable form available. Each capsule contains 200 mcg of chromium from chromium picolinate. Chromium Picolinate is available in bottles of 100 capsules. (C, MS) CAUTION: Because chromium can increase insulin sensitivity, this may alter insulin requirements in diabetics. Potassium Iodide: Potassium iodide has many uses in water purification, cleansing solutions, etc. Potassium iodide is a highly concentrated solution in distilled water and has 21.4 mg of iodine per drop. Caution should be used when treating foods with potassium iodide, since excessive iodine can impede thyroid function. Each dropper bottle contains 2 fl oz of potassium iodide solution. Selenium: Each tablet contains 100 mcg of selenium as an amino acid chelate. Each tablet is slotted so it can be easily broken in half for a 50 mcg dose. Selenium is available in bottles of 60 tablets. (C, CS)

Tri-Min: Tri-Min is a combination of three essential trace elements. Each tablet supplies: zinc (15 mg as amino acid chelate), manganese (10 mg as amino acid chelate), and selenium (50 mcg organically bound to yeast). Tri-Min is available in bottles of 100 tablets. Digestive Care

Activated Charcoal: Our activated charcoal capsules are made from plant products only. Charcoal is a powerful absorber of gas and toxins, but may also absorb nutrients and medications and should be used separately from them when possible. Colon-Aid: Three capsules of Colon-Aid contain 750 million live Lactobacillus acidophilus, 750 million Bifidobacterium bifidus plus 1000 mg of Fructoolligosaccharides. Digestine: Digestine contains a broad spectrum of digestive enzymes. Each tablet contains: Pancreatin (140 mg of porcine), mycozyme (140 mg, an amylase enzyme isolate from fungi), papain (70 mg from papaya), pepsin (70 mg), betaine HCl (70 mg), and iron ox bile (65 mg bovine). The pancreatin is enteric coated for release in the small intestine (that will not release with pH below 6.8) thereby preventing denaturation of the active enzyme. Nattokinase: Nattokinase is a very specialized substrate specific fibrinolytic enzyme produced by fermentation of soybeans with Bacillus subtilsin natto. Other enzymes have fibrinolytic activity, but only true nattokinase has been demonstrated to be absorbed after oral ingestion as an active enzyme, and to have physiological efficacy. Caution: Although nattokinase is a safe whole food extract, caution should be used when using it with blood-thinning medications and/or high doses of supplements known to act as blood thinners such as vitamin E and Gingko Biloba.
